CSMART Secures Bahamas Maritime Authority Accreditation for STCW IGF Advanced Certification Pathway
As the maritime industry continues its transition towards alternative fuels, the demand for highly qualified personnel operating LNG-fueled vessels continues to grow. To support this need, CSMART, part of Carnival Corporation, has received interim accreditation from the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) for its LNG Management (Level 1) program, creating a new pathway for seafarers seeking the STCW IGF Advanced Certificate of Proficiency.
Supporting the Future of Alternative Fuel Operations
Traditionally, obtaining an IGF Advanced Certificate of Proficiency required seafarers to complete sea service and participate in an additional live LNG bunkering operation onboard. Through a program developed in collaboration with and overseen by the BMA, these requirements can now be achieved through a comprehensive combination of advanced simulation training and practical LNG bunkering experience delivered ashore.
The accreditation follows a program, conducted under BMA oversight, encompassing CSMART 4092, LNG Management (Level 1), together with the associated BMA add-on program, CSMART 4097, designed to align with the specific, operational requirements set out in Carnival-specific procedures. The combined program enables eligible participants to demonstrate all competencies required to succeed onboard our Carnival fleets. This includes, in addition to the STCW framework for IGF Advanced certification, Carnival – and cruise specific competencies. The program provides a detailed level of realism and relevance, while training in a controlled and highly engaging environment. All this is designed to prepare participants for operational and HSQE excellence onboard the Carnival fleet.
Combining Simulation and Real-World Experience
A key differentiator of the program is its practical approach. Participants complete two separate LNG bunkering simulations as part of the training program, gaining hands-on experience in planning, conducting, and managing bunkering operations. These simulator exercises are supplemented by a live bunkering event, providing exposure to real-world LNG transfer operations under carefully controlled conditions.
CSMART’s training methodology combines advanced simulator technology with operational learning, allowing seafarers to develop the knowledge, decision-making skills, and practical competencies required to safely operate vessels using low-flashpoint fuels.
Meeting and Exceeding International Standards
The LNG Management program already exceeds the minimum training requirements established within the STCW framework for IGF Advanced certification. The BMA-accredited pathway maintains all required competencies while offering an innovative alternative to traditional sea-service-based qualification routes.
In addition to the Bahamas Maritime Authority accreditation, the program is also recognized by both the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate (NSI), reflecting its alignment with internationally recognized maritime training standards.
